Interdependence…It’s Nature’s Law
Let’s continue with the examples of interdependence within natural systems from the previous post. Our ecosystem is both a part of the earth and dependent on the earth. The earth’s positioning in our solar system relative to our sun provides the perfect conditions to sustain our ecosystem. Earth is currently the only planet in the observable universe known to contain life. Conversely, the earth is dependent on the biodiversity in our ecosystem to maintain the proper balance of elements it needs. This pattern of interdependence in natural systems continues all the way up to the observable universe level and all the way down to living things like humans, the subsystems within us (respiratory, digestive, skeletal, nervous, etc.), the subsystems that operate within those systems, and so on all the way down to the smallest known elements in the human body (atoms, electrons, protons, neutrons, etc).
Natural systems consist of countless balancing feedback loop processes that support each system and subsystem. The lesson in this is that all natural systems, including humans, are made from interconnected and interdependent systems and subsystems while also existing and playing an active role within larger systems. We are connected to everything in the observable universe. Everything in the observable universe is a system. Everything in the observable universe exists within a system. You and I are walking talking systems. You, I, and every human are connected and interdependent based on the universal laws of nature. According to these laws, no human is more valuable or powerful than another human.
Both systems thinking and the science of biomimicry inform me that we as humans are designed to support and sustain each other using our innate talents in balancing feedback loop relationships with other humans, other living things, and the environment. So just like we naturally exchange carbon dioxide for oxygen with plants…a person gifted at home repairs should naturally exchange that skill with someone gifted at car repairs. The differences in skills and abilities that we possess as humans are nature’s way of creating balance.
The dominant human-made social systems that exist like for example healthcare, policing, education, and party politics are failed replications of the way nature works because they have not been designed using systems thinking. Instead, they are isolated and siloed, linear and reductive.
Thanks for reading. I hope you’ll join me for my next post!

There’s so much alignment in our thoughts. I loved this!
