Shifting To Stewardship
A key step in moving away from the oppression and divisiveness embedded in the system of ownership and the practice of owning land and property is to collectively shift to a mindset of land stewardship.
The Land Stewardship Centre defines stewardship as the recognition of our collective responsibility to retain the quality and abundance of our land, air, water, and biodiversity, and to manage this natural capital in a way that conserves all of its values, be they environmental, economic, social, or cultural.
People and organizations have been adopting land stewardship practices and beliefs by embracing sustainable resource management, promoting biodiversity, engaging in reforestation and habitat restoration, implementing traditional Indigenous ecological knowledge, adopting regenerative agriculture techniques, forming partnerships with Indigenous communities, prioritizing conservation, and advocating for policy changes that protect the environment and promote responsible land use.
Some indicators that land stewardship is increasingly being embraced by people include the growing membership in environmental organizations, the rising adoption of sustainable agriculture practices such as organic farming and agroforestry, the expansion of protected areas and community-based conservation programs, increased implementation of government policies and programs promoting sustainable land management and collaboration with Indigenous communities.
Additionally, we’ve also seen a higher number of corporate sustainability initiatives that prioritize responsible land use and environmental conservation and shifting public opinion as revealed through surveys showing heightened awareness and support for sustainable land management practices and environmental stewardship.
